Manual Well Drilling Overview¶

Manual drilling refers to human-powered techniques used to bore holes into shallow-to-medium depth aquifers (typically 10m to 40m). These methods require zero heavy truck transport, making them ideal for remote rural villages with soft or semi-consolidated formations.

A common mistake in rural WASH planning is confusing the cost of drilling the hole with the total turnkey cost of a functioning, safe community water point.
A complete, contaminated-free well requires well casing, screen, filter gravel pack, sanitary bentonite grout, a reinforced concrete apron/plinth, drainage trough, soakaway pit, pumping hardware, and water quality testing:
