World Water Day Report: Sand Dams Anchor Drought Resilience Across the Horn of Africa

MACHAKOS, KENYA — On World Water Day 2026, empirical hydrologic surveys from the Africa Sand Dam Foundation (ASDF) and Excellent Development demonstrated that reinforced sand dams across Kenya and Zimbabwe maintained clean water yields through consecutive failed rainy seasons.

Unlike open surface reservoirs that lose up to 50% of stored water to evaporation in tropical heat, sand dams trap coarse river sand during flash floods, creating an artificial underground sand aquifer that holds up to 40% water by volume.

Because the water is stored beneath 2 to 5 meters of sand, it suffers zero evaporative loss, prevents mosquito breeding, and naturally filters out pathogens through granular straining. Over 1,000 sand dams are now operational across sub-Saharan Africa, providing sustainable lifespans exceeding 30 to 50 years.
