Sanitary Apron & Wellhead Protection Engineering¶
The single most common cause of biological contamination in rural boreholes and hand-dug wells is surface wastewater seeping down the outside of the well casing rather than contamination of the deep aquifer itself.
A properly engineered sanitary apron, plinth, and drainage soakaway forms an impermeable seal that protects the groundwater source for its entire 15-to-30-year operational life.

5 Critical Sanitary Protection Elements¶
1. The Grout Sanitary Seal (Top 3–5 Meters)¶
The annular space between the borehole wall and the PVC casing must be filled with neat cement slurry or swelling bentonite clay down to at least 3 to 5 meters. This creates an impermeable hydraulic barrier against surface runoff, pit latrine leachate, and animal waste.
2. The Raised Concrete Plinth¶
The pump base is bolted onto a raised concrete pedestal (15cm to 20cm above the apron). This ensures that dirty spilled water pooling around feet cannot enter the well casing through baseplate bolt holes.
3. The Reinforced Concrete Apron¶
- Diameter: Minimum 1.5m to 2.0m radius around the pump.
- Slope: 1:20 (5% fall) sloping outward toward the drainage outlet.
- Reinforcement: Welded wire mesh (BRC mesh) or 8mm rebar prevents cracking under heavy daily pedestrian loads.
4. Drainage Trough (Spillway)¶
A masonry or concrete channel at least 5 to 10 meters long carries wastewater away from the wellhead. Stagnant puddles within 10 meters of the wellhead allow bacteria and mosquito vectors to flourish.
5. Gravel Soakaway Pit & Perimeter Fence¶
- Soakaway Pit: 1m × 1m × 1m pit filled with clean, coarse gravel allows wastewater to infiltrate safely into topsoil.
- Livestock Fence: A thorn or wire fence surrounding the 10m sanitary zone prevents cattle, goats, and dogs from defecating near the water point.
