Mechanized & Hybrid Drilling Systems¶

When hydrogeological conditions involve consolidated bedrock (granite, basalt, quartzite) or require drilling deeper than 40 meters, manual drilling is insufficient. Mechanized and human-mechanical hybrid systems bridge this gap.
The Village Drill (ASME Award Winner)¶
Designed by Brigham Young University and commercialized by WHOlives, the Village Drill is an ultra-portable rotary drill rig powered either by a 4-person human torque ring or a 10–13 HP small gas engine.
- Capability: Drills to depths of up to 80 meters (260 ft) through rock formations.
- Logistics: Breaks down into individual modules that can be carried over footpaths and small bridges where 20-ton commercial drill trucks cannot travel.
- Cost Efficiency: Reduces typical deep well drilling costs from $12,000–$18,000 down to $3,000–$4,500 USD.
Heavy Rotary & DTH Hammer Rigs¶

- Rotary Mud Drilling: Uses high-viscosity bentonite mud circulation to support unconsolidated borehole walls during deep drilling (50m to 300m).
- Down-the-Hole (DTH) Air Hammer: Uses high-pressure compressed air (180–350 PSI) driving a pneumatic percussion hammer to smash through hard crystalline bedrock at speeds up to 10–20 meters per hour.
