Solar Disinfection (SODIS) & UV-C LEDs

Solar Water Disinfection (SODIS) uses transparent PET plastic bottles and natural sunlight to purify contaminated water.

Swiss Eawag SODIS Protocol

  1. Fill clean, un-scratched transparent PET bottles with water of low turbidity (<30 NTU).
  2. Place bottles horizontally on a reflective surface (e.g., corrugated metal roof) in direct sunlight for 6 hours (or 2 days if overcast).
  3. Synergistic Action: UV-A rays generate reactive oxygen species that destroy bacterial membranes, while heat (above 50°C) accelerates pathogen mortality.
